Terrorism and violent extremism

We have to live with the thought that in the next hundred years there will be peace, but also be prepared for war tomorrow. This phrase has a common denominator with terrorism, causing fear, and personal insecurity among citizens, which in fact constitutes its immediate goal.

After the terrorist attacks in the past twenty years, the world cannot live peacefully without worrying about its safety tomorrow. Apart from the other security problems, the world faces the “new normality” embodied in the threat of terrorism and terrorist attack.

Terrorism has evolved in the recent decades and has become an essential threat to international security. Its complexity caused confusion and reflected the disagreement of the experts with regard to its definition. The problem further increases in the situation when the individual, who is regarded as a terrorist by one segment of the society, becomes an idol or a symbol of a freedom fighter in the other segment of society, thus leaving the problem unsolved. But, if we want to tackle this problem, we must accept the anachronistic ways of thinking and paradigms. As mentioned, this problem is complex and requires a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach.

Violence extremism is the use of violence, in line with an ideological commitment to achieve political, religious, or social goals. PVE measures aim to create an environment where people can be in control of their own lives, free from manipulation by violence, propaganda, and hate speech. Violent extremism is a fundamental social problem, which calls for social solutions where everyone is a stakeholder.

While young women and men in the beneficiary countries seek opportunities to invest their potential, they are often negatively affected by poverty, marginalization, unemployment and under-employment, and often find themselves lacking the necessary literacy, capabilities, and skills to overcome these issues. This makes them a vulnerable target of recruitment by violent extremist groups that exploit their frustrations and vulnerability. Paradoxically, the potential, self-confidence and motivation of youth to change the world for the better can also have the strongest impact against violent extremism.

C3I takes a proactive approach to preventing violent extremism by placing emphasis on human rights and open communication in order to prevent and combat the hatred and ignorance that fuels violent extremism. By empowering young women and men to be change-makers in their own communities, C3I is actively working towards the promotion of understanding, tolerance and peace.
